Newcastle race betting preview
Eight races are set to be run and won at Newcastle on Friday, headlined by the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket. The track is rated a Soft 6 but could improve by race day, and the rail is out +8m from the 1000m to the 400m and +7m for the remainder. Race 1 is set to jump at 1:25pm AEDT, while the Newmarket will go at 5:10pm.
Best Bet: Members Only
Nathan Doyle and James McDonald combine with Members Only. On debut the three-year-old son of Toronado finished only half a length off Calgary Queen and put a gap of nearly two lengths on the third horse, which was pleasing to see for his first race start. That run came over the 1200m at this track on a Heavy 8, so the drying track and the rise to 1400m should be a suitable situation. Drawn well in barrier six, he should get the run of the race and be too good for them.
Race 4 – Members Only (#1)[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1362877_04]
Next Best: Stonehenge
Stonehenge improved lengths when second at Goulburn over 1500m last time out. Despite being beaten comprehensively, he spaced the rest of the field by four lengths, suggesting that he has a win in him soon. Back to Newcastle and out to the mile will be ideal, while gate six under Tommy Berry will see him sit outside the leader and pull away to justify his even-money quote. This is a nice race to break through at start four.

Best Value: Dark Energy
James Cummings and Christian Reith link up with the beautifully bred Dark Energy (Exosphere x Mnemosyne). The two-year-old colt was beaten a combined nine lengths in his first two trials and then failed to beat one home on debut at Warwick Farm when 5.6 lengths off Head Of State. He has since been back to the trials and won, and he gets the crossover nose band on for the first time. Back in class to the provincials and drawn in barrier six gives him every chance to improve and at least run a drum here at double figures.
