Feature race Race 7: Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket (1400m)

HorseBetting’s New South Wales form analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for Friday’s Newcastle Newmarket meeting, along with odds from Australia’s top betting sites. The Group 3 feature will be run as the penultimate race, and it has attracted a quality field of 13 horses. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, but ‘The Big Wet’ is on its way south, so we are expecting a downgrade before the first race jumps at 1:25pm AEDT. The rail is out 2m for the entire circuit, so we are expecting the track to play fairly as it usually does.

Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket – Wandabaa

There aren’t many horses that are more consistent that the Kris Lees-trained Wandabaa. This five-year-old mare by Wandjina has had 30 starts, winning seven of those and finishing in the minor money on 13 other occasions. In three starts at Newcastle, Wandabaa has not been out of the placings, which saw her finish second to Lost And Running in The Hunter back in November over 1300m. This mare has a great second-up record, winning twice and running third twice from five goes. She has drawn wide in barrier 11, but Jason Collett knows the horse well, so he will ride her quietly and look to finish off strongly down the middle of the big track. She loves a wet track, and she was good first-up in a tough race.

Newcastle Best Bet – Bessmati

We really like this filly. Bessmati caught the eye on debut at Doomben, charging home to run second behind Pomade, before going to Randwick in the Listed Lonhro Plate, where she was outsprinted over 1000m. Annabel Neasham took this daughter of Fastnet Rock to Wyong on February 15, where she never looked in doubt over 1300m in maiden company, so we expect her to be hard to beat again as she rises to 1400m. In her maiden win, Bessmati settled much closer in the run, so having drawn barrier one on Friday, Nash Rawiller can use the gate to his advantage and be prominent. She does rise 3kg in weight off her last win, so that is the only knock; however, she looks to be a nice big strong thoroughbred, so she should be able to carry the weight, while the wet track won’t be an issue.

Next Best at Newcastle – Headliner

Chris Waller and Jason Collett combine in the fourth race with a three-year-old filly who really should have won a race by now. Headliner caught the eye on debut in January 2021, flashing home to run second behind Stay Inside. She didn’t perform at that level in her second start, running ninth to Stay Inside in the Pierro Plate at Randwick before going for a spell. She had one more run as a two-year-old, finishing seventh in the Listed Woodlands Stakes. In her three runs of the spring, this daughter of Star Turn went around behind the likes of Snitzonfire, Fangirl and Roots, which is very good form for this race. Her two trials have been good, while she gets in well from barrier seven and should appreciate the big straight with a little bit of give in the ground. This looks a good race for this filly.

Newcastle Value Bet – Kingdom Of Gold

It really isn’t much of a race, this one. To open the day, a Class 1 & Maiden Plate will be run and won over 2300m, where 11 horses will go around to win either their first or second race. We are siding with the bottom weight in Kingdom Of Gold, who ran third at this track and distance on February 24. The three-year-old son of Animal Kingdom was supported late in betting, starting $6.50 behind even-money favourites Aquileon and Monfelicity, and he did well to run 1.83 lengths behind that pair. That run was on a Soft 5 and he seemed to be very dour, so we expect that he will handle wet conditions again on Friday. William Pike goes on, replacing Ashley Morgan, and with no disrespect to Morgan, it is a massive upgrade. From barrier five, Kingdom Of Gold can get the run of the race and break through at start five.
