When Tuesday, May 18, 2021
First Race 12:50pm AEST

Seven races are to be run and won at Newcastle on Tuesday afternoon as the main provincial meeting in New South Wales. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is out 3m for the entire circuit, and the forecast shows perfect conditions for racing. HorseBetting.com.au brings you our best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections for the meeting, which is set to get underway at 12:50pm AEST.

Best Bet: Astero

Matthew Smith and Kathy O’Hara combine with Astero, who was an impressive winner first up from a six-month spell at Hawkesbury on May 4. The Zoustar gelding has started his career in fine form, having only finished outside the top two on one occasion in five starts. He has shown in his career that he is tactically versatile, but from barrier three we expect O’Hara to settle him close to the speed over 1400m. Only bad luck should beat him on Tuesday afternoon, as he should be exploding away from his rivals over the final 200m.

Best BetRace 5 – Astero (#4) $2.15 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Sian

We do not need to look far for one of the better bets on the card, as the Kris Lees-trained Sian appears awfully hard to beat in the opening event on Tuesday. The Pride Of Dubai gelding was last seen running a narrow second in BM66 company at Taree on May 3, and he will not be far from the running throughout the 1600m here. We expect Brenton Avdulla to use barrier four to his advantage and have his mount in the first four upon settling. If he gets a bit of luck at the top of the straight, we expect the three-year-old to peel off the leader’s back and put this Class 1 field to bed.

Next BestRace 1 – Sian (#2.40) $2.40 with Ladbrokes

Best Value: Leave Me Be

The Chris Waller-trained Leave Me Be was an impressive maiden winner at Wyong last time out on April 29. She righted the wrongs of her horror show at Gosford the star prior, where she was rolled as a $2.30 favourite. Her win at Wyong saw her put in the best last 600m sectional of the field after racing up on speed, which is always an encouraging sign. Lee Magorrian retains the ride, and coming to Newcastle third up, the filly will be rock-hard fit and from barrier three should not be far away throughout the race.

Best ValueRace 4 – Leave Me Be (#8) $10 with Sportsbet
