Newcastle racing preview & best bets | Wednesday, April 12
What | Newcastle Races |
Where | Newcastle Racecourse – 100 Darling St, Broadmeadow NSW 2292 |
When | Wednesday, April 12, 2023 |
First Race | 12:50pm AEST |
Racing heads to the Hunter region of NSW on Wednesday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program. We should have perfect conditions for racegoers with minimal rain forecast for the meeting. Expect a Good 4 surface for race-day, and with the rail back in the true position the entire circuit, we should be in for a terrific hump-day of racing. The first race is set to get underway at 12:50pm AEST.
Best Bet at Newcastle: Lipscani
On a tricky day at Newcastle, Lipscani looks a strong candidate for the best bet of the afternoon. He’s still a two-start maiden but doesn’t look too far off victory based on how he hit the line on both occasions. His latest run at Kembla Grange on March 28 saw him beaten convincingly over the 1200m on a bottomless Heavy track, and now finding some firmer footing, we should be seeing the best of this Toronado gelding. We have a good opinion of Hedge Fund, who beat him by four lengths on the line, and despite that margin, we’re confident Lipscani will give a bold showing on Wednesday afternoon. Zac Lloyd takes the reins back after steering him into third on debut and will be settling Lipscani somewhere mid-field before powering over the top of his rivals.

Next Best at Newcastle: Silvakia
Silvakia is one of the more intriguing runners engaged on Wednesday afternoon. Her last two starts have been behind some of the best quality three-year-old fillies in the land, as she finished 2.1 lengths off Premise on March 11 at Gosford before heading into Group level company in the Adrian Knox Stakes on April 1. The latter was on an unsuitable Heavy surface and she wasn’t disgraced, despite what the 7.7-length margin may suggest. Premise has since gone on to run third in last Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Oaks, providing a very strong guide for Silvakia leading into Wednesday. She gets some relief in the weights at 55.5kg compared to some of her key opposition, and with the experienced Joshua Parr hopping aboard, we’re getting an outstanding price with online bookmakers to be in her corner.

Best Value at Newcastle: Per Capita
Per Capita represents good each-way value in the third race of the Newcastle program and looks to be peaking third-up for the Annabel Neasham yard. He’s just barely missed the frame in his two times of asking and now finds a perfect assignment over the 1600m. Jett Stanley’s 2kg claim gets Per Capita down nicely in the weights to 56.5kg, and the apprentice would’ve had the choice of ride after steering the stablemate Tot Of Rum at Mudgee on April 2. Plenty of runners come through that form-line, and with the positive gate to go along with the swing in the weight, you’d have to imagine Per Capita will give followers a sight. Expect Stanley to either lead them up or drop in behind the leaders for cover; regardless of what he chooses, Per Capita can find the frame to jag punters a return.
