Newcastle Newmarket betting preview

Friday sees the running of the Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap over the 1400m. A quality field of 12 runners has been assembled, with most headed towards the Doncaster Mile in a month’s time. Cascadian is the current favourite ahead of Bottega, Outrageous and Gem Song. Just Thinkin’ looks to be the leader on paper, while Maui Girl, Outrageous and Academy will settle in the first few.

Bottega (#8) looks a horse to really follow this campaign, so we are happy to back him first up at a track he has won at in the past. The son of Snitzel hasn’t quite cracked it at the top level yet, but he has been comfortable in similar class to this. A fast-finishing fifth in the Golden Eagle reads well, and his trial in the lead up to Friday’s feature was very good. The four-year-old entire has won first up in the past and has drawn to get the favours from barrier two under Kerrin McEvoy. With speed on, he will finish off quickly.

Speaking of finishing quickly, Kris Lees’ Gem Song (#2) was terrific late in the Southern Cross Stakes in his first run for 15 months, hitting the line well at the 1200m trip behind Masked Crusader. The rise to 1400m will suit the five-year-old son of Your Song, and he has the option to settle closer from barrier five for Nash Rawiller. The improving track conditions are likely to be a massive advantage too given all of his form comes on dry ground.

Purple Sector (#3) was good last campaign, winning the Spring Mile and the Cup Day Plate at Randwick and Flemington respectively. While he hasn’t won at the distance or when fresh, he is a model of consistency and has to be respected. The five-year-old also has a terrific record on dry surfaces, and Hugh Bowman has partnered the son of Pins once for a runner-up performance when first up last campaign. He will get the run to suit from barrier nine and should finish off well.
