HorseBetting’s NSW racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for Thursday’s eight-race program at Newcastle, which is scheduled to get started at 12:35pm AEST. The track is currently a Heavy 8 and the rail is out 9m for the entire course.

Best Bet at Newcastle – Sammiballerina

Three-year-old filly Sammiballerina returns to her original trainer, Tim McIntosh, for what will be her first start in New South Wales. The daughter of Sebring Sun has raced twice in Central Queensland, finishing third to the very talented Chinny Boom and then taking out the $125,000 Capricornia Yearling Sale 2YO Classic at Rockhampton on April 9. In her two starts, she has raced on the speed and settled in behind the leading division, so jockey Mitchell Bell will have a couple of options from barrier seven. While she is up against the older horses in this Class 1 over 900m, in just two career starts she has earnt almost $20,000 more than the second-highest money earner, and that horse has had 28 starts. She has ability, and this is a pretty weak field against which to try to prove her point.

Best Bet

Race 3 – Silk #7 Sammiballerina (7)

3yo Filly | T: Tim McIntosh | J: Mitchell Bell (55kg)

$8.50 with Ladbrokes

Next Best at Newcastle –

James Cummings saddles up untried three-year-old Bayezid in the second race of the afternoon. The colt by I Am Invincible gets the services of champion jockey James McDonald and has had the benefit of ample trial experience. Bayezid has won two of his four barrier trials, including his most recent at Warwick Farm on July 22. In his first trial this preparation, he really wanted to fight the rider when being restrained, pulling his head quite severely, but once he was allowed to stride in the concluding stages, he closed off nicely. We loved his most recent trial when allowed to go forward, run freely and cruise through the line. From the wide gate, we are hoping to see McDonald let this horse run and give them something to catch.

Next Best

Race 2 – Silk #1 Bayezid (12)

3yo Colt | T: James Cummings | J: James McDonald (57kg)

$2.40 with Bet365

Best Value at Newcastle – Penso A Lei

Joseph Pride and Tyler Schiller combine in the fourth race of the afternoon with five-year-old mare Penso A Lei. While she has only won two from 14, the daughter of So You Think looks well suited to provincial class after racing in metropolitan company at her past three outings. At her latest, she was fair behind Hot Spring Gold at Eagle Farm, finishing six lengths away on a track that was unlikely to suit her. From barrier four, Schiller can dig her up and put her in a closer position, rather than forcing her to do the chasing in this 1600m contest. It has been a long time between drinks for this mare, but a win in this class won’t shock.

Best Value

Race 4 – Silk #6 Penso A Lei (4)

5yo Mare | T: Joseph Pride | J: Tyler Schiller (56.5kg)

$8.50 with Neds
