When Thursday, April 22, 2021
First Race 12:40pm AEST

Eight provincial races will be run and won at Newcastle on Thursday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4 at the time of writing, and the rail is out 6.5m for the entire circumference of the course. Here are HorseBetting.com.au’s best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which is due to start at 12:40pm AEST.

Best Bet: My Delight

Chris Waller’s My Delight won her maiden in barnstorming fashion at Canterbury on April 7, coming from second last at the 800m mark to win by a long neck. It was hard to make ground that day, and the leader and heavily backed favourite Echo Point looked to have it pretty easy in front, so she had no right to win like she did. That win came over 1550m and she now rises to 1880m, which will certainly help on a big track like Newcastle. Having drawn wide in barrier 13, we expect her to get back again before eating up her rivals late with the extra trip.

Best BetRace 5 – My Delight (#6) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Tillotson

John Thompson and Keagan Latham combine in the opener with a two-year-old Deep Field filly having her first race start. While Tillotson is yet to win any of her three trials, she has been half a length off Four Moves Ahead and two lengths off Jamaea, who won the Percy Sykes Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. Drawn in barrier five and down on the minimum, we expect her to be handy over the 900m and too sharp for her rivals. She has trialled well enough to be a real winning chance on debut.

Next BestRace 1 – Tillotson (#9) $3 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Chalmers

Kris Lees saddles up apprentice Dylan Gibbons in the last race of the day aboard track specialist Chalmers. The six-year-old son of Mossman has had eight starts at Newcastle for two wins and four minor placings, and he is yet to miss the places over 1200m here. He comes into this first up, and while he hasn’t won fresh before, he has placed a few times and has had two trials to bring him on. He won a Benchmark 68 and a Benchmark 88 in consecutive runs last time in with 59kg and 60kg respectively, so the drop to a BM68 with 58.5kg after Gibbons’ 3kg claim should be a big advantage. Jumping from the middle of the pack in the big field, he should get plenty of cover and be kept for one last crack at them.

Best ValueRace 8 – Chalmers (#1) $18 with Sportsbet
