New Zealand Oaks winner joins Lindsay Park stables

2016 New Zealand Oaks-winning four-year-old Fanatic will join Lindsay Park to prepare for the Melbourne spring carnival

THE owner of 2016 New Zealand Oaks winner Fanatic will be hoping a change of scenery can turn its moderate form around.

The four-year-old mare by Shocking has been transferred from the Graeme Sanders and Debbie Sweeney stable to Lindsay Park in Melbourne in the hopes to avoid a wet Kiwi winter.

It has won only once since taking out the Oaks at Trentham over Sofia Rosa, which included a fourth in the Wellington Cup and a sixth in the Auckland Cup, but its form hasn’t been at its best and the owner are now seeking some Australian black type to enhance its pedigree.

“I spoke to Graeme about it and he agreed it was better to kick off her campaign over there on the better tracks, rather than running at Hawke’s Bay on wet tracks,” owner Sean Kiernan said.

“I don’t know what races she’ll target. I’ll just leave that up to David (Hayes) – you don’t tell a Hall of Famer how to suck eggs.

“We just want her pedigree enhanced if at all possible.”

Fanatic had paid up to run in the Caulfield Cup last year, but a spider bite caused connections to scratch a day out from the race. Kiernan isn’t getting ahead of himself before another tilt at the Melbourne spring carnival.

“I don’t want to preempt anything. We were a day away from a Caulfield Cup with 50kg on her back and she got a spider bite so we’re not getting ahead of ourselves,” Kiernan said.

“She’s wintered extremely well. She’s been out for six weeks and put on over a kilo a day. I was up at Curraghmore (Stud) on Sunday and there’s a hell of a shine on her.”

In other news from across the Tasman, the talented Shaune Ritchie-trained Let Her Rip will not be flying over for the Brisbane winter carnival after winning at Te Rapa on Saturday, with Ritchie instead giving the mare a spell before targetting the Makfi Challenge Stakes.

“We gave it a lot of thought, but we’ve decided to give her a month to six weeks in the paddock,” Ritchie said.

“If she was going to stud we would have had a crack, but she’ll be racing on for another season so we’ll probably have a look at the Makfi in the spring for her.”
