Moruya Showcase Cup Horse Betting Preview

The $75,000 Moruya Showcase Cup is the feature race around the country on Monday. Run over 1425m at Benchmark 87 level, a field of 17 classy country gallopers has been assembled, topped by Donandkim and Gunga Din. Payton Place will lead the big field, while Jarrett, Hay Bale and Sedition will likely push on from the deep.

We are siding with ex-Victorian sprinter, Hay Bale here at a juicy price. The now locally trained gelding has taken to the Moruya track like a duck to water, winning three times and placing three times here from seven starts. His wet track form is terrific, with two wins and a second from three attempts on heavy going, so he’ll appreciate the slop. Drawn barrier 11 under Shaun Guymer, he’ll push forward to look for a position in the first few. In what doesn’t look like a strong tempo, he can be benefiting late and win this at around $14.

Gunga Din was a brilliant winner less than seven days ago in the TAB Federal at Canberra, so he should be fit for this. Down 4.5kg in weights and the experienced Jay Ford back on board is an advantage, and he clearly has the class to win this. Unlike Hay Bale however, Keith Dryden’s five-year-old doesn’t appreciate wet tracks so he could be a touch out of his depth. Barrier 7 will suit, as he’ll settle midfield and be finishing strongly late if the speed is good enough. He’s probably the best horse in the race, and on form he can be winning, but the wet track has us slightly cautious.

Greg Backhouse saddles up last start winner, Whisky’n’diamonds here. The winner of the Xmas Cup at this track defeated Hay Bale by a neck on that occasion over 1300m, but meets him 1.5kg worse off here. He’s only won once on a soft track and placed at his only start on the heavy going, so he should get through the going well enough. A six time winner at Moruya, the Commands gelding will get back from barrier 2, but should be finding the line very well late under Jordan Mallyon.
