Racing returns to Morphettville for a nine-part card on Saturday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s South Australian horse racing analyst presents his best bets, top odds and free quaddie selections for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 7, while the rail is out 8m from the 1200m to the winning post and then out 6m for the remainder. The first race is set to get underway at 11:32am ACST (12:02pm AEST).
Morphettville Best Bet: My Boy Birmingham
Tony McEvoy will be looking to keep My Boy Birmingham undefeated as he returns across the border following a dominant debut win on the Ballarat synthetic. He was keen in the running early on that occasion but managed to work himself to the front of the field, where he was then able to kick clear and put three lengths on his rivals. From barrier 17 under Jacob Opperman, the three-year-old gelding will need to work early to find the lead, but Opperman’s 2kg claim will help. If the son of Unencumbered is afforded the luck to do so, he should be dictate terms and then kick away at the top of the straight to make it consecutive wins to begin his career.
Next Best at Morphettville: Icecrusher
We were with the Shayne Cahill-trained Icecrusher on the Morphettville Parks track on June 13, and she rewarded us with a well-timed run. A genuine tempo was set on that day, and when Jacob Opperman asked for an effort, the six-year-old mare was able to finish over the top of her rivals and win in pretty soft fashion in the end. With a hot tempo expected again on Saturday, we anticipate that the daughter of Frost Giant will handle the step up to BM68 grade from a BM60. As long as Opperman does not get caught in traffic, Icecrusher should be able to finish over the top of them again to bring up consecutive victories.
Morphettville Value Bet: Lorente
In the opening leg of the quaddie, Ciaron Maher & David Eustace send their four-year-old son of Fiorente to Morphettville in a bid to continue his rise through the grades. Lorente was a smart last-start winner over the Ballarat 2000m on a Heavy 8, bringing up a fourth win from eight career starts. He plummets 4.5kg off that run, and considering the gelding is undefeated from two starts at 2000m, he should have no trouble seeing out the trip. The cut out of the ground won’t hurt either.
