Morphettville Best Bet – Keep Reading
The Richard & Chantelle Jolly-trained Keep Reading is a horse we have a lot of time for, and although he failed as a $1.60 chance last time out, we are willing to give him another go. He plummets in weight here, going around in this BM72 with just 54.5kg on his back – a handy 4.5kg relief from his last-start second on November 6. The form out of that race has been franked with Star Espresso, who finished third on that day, coming out and winning her subsequent start. It was his second time that Keep Reading had failed to claim victory when first-up, and considering he won second-up over 1100m in his initial campaign, we are confident he can bounce back here. From barrier five, we expect Jake Toeroek to be positive in the first 100m and try to have the three-year-old son of Headwater settled just off the leader’s heels. With natural improvement following that first-up run, Keep Reading looks every chance to return to the winner’s circle.
Next Best Bet at Morphettville – Swiss Hero
Following a smart win at Warrnambool on November 5, Archie Alexander sends Swiss Hero to the Morphettville 1800m, where he looks very hard to go past. Having box seated on that day, he quickly ambled up alongside the leaders at the top of the straight before putting his rivals away with relative ease. Will Price has travelled to South Australia to retain the ride, and although he has a decent book outside of Swiss Hero, that looks to be a move worth following. Stepping up the extra 100m looks ideal, as the son of Pierro was strong through the line at 1700m, and with Price’s 1.5kg claim, they should take a power of beating.
Best Value Bet at Morphettville – Second Slip
Having gone down to I’m Thunderstruck by 3.4 lengths in the Toorak Handicap two starts back, the Will Clarken-trained Second Slip looks a good bet in the Listed City Of Marion Stakes. Despite a dreadful run in the Gawler Cup last time out, class alone should have him right in the thick of it in a race like this. From barrier 10, we expect Todd Pannell to roll forward on this son of Alamosa, and with speed drawn outside of him, he should get a nice cart across the front of the field. The $10 on offer looks to be a steal, and if he can box seat or lead this field up, he will take a power of beating.
