Racing returns this Saturday to the course proper at Morphettville, where the Listed Lightning Stakes is the feature event on a nine-race program. We look set to be racing on a Soft 6, while the rail comes out 10m from the 1200m mark to the winning post and then out 7m for the remainder. The day of racing gets underway at 11:52am ACST.
Lightning Stakes Top Tip: Scorched Earth
With a strong autumn campaign behind her, the John Moloney-trained Scorched Earth returns to the races in the Listed Lightning Stakes and looks the one to beat. The filly goes up against a strong field of three-year-olds over 1050m, but considering she finished a pimple off Argentia in the Kevin Hayes Stakes two runs prior to her spell, she brings the best form lines into this race. The daughter of Nicconi has a win and two minor placings from four first-up attempts, so we know she will handle the occasion on Saturday. With speed drawn directly underneath her, Jessica Eaton will most likely aim for a sit in the one-one. If she can do just that, then Scorched Earth – who has arguably the best turn of foot in the race – can use that potential tactical advantage to put her rivals away.

Best Bet at Morphettville: Spanish Heirloom
The Travis Doudle-trained Spanish Heirloom returned with a dominant win on the Parks track on July 16. It is hard to knock the racing pattern of the four-year-old, as she jumps cleanly from the barriers, looks for the rail and, more often than not, gives a kick in the home straight. She gained an uncontested lead last time out and looks almost certain to gain a similar run in transit in this. She won by 2.5 lengths on that day, and despite rising 2kg in the weights, we anticipate Jason Benbow will have her rated a treat out in front. Six of her eight career wins have come on rain-affected going, and with $3.50 available on the online betting sites, she simply looks a perfect play in these conditions.

Next Best at Morphettville: Melody Man
Despite coming off a poor first-up showing, the Jake Stephens-trained Melody Man will prove too hard to hold out in BM64 grade if he is anywhere near his best. The five-year-old gelding looked in need of the run first-up on the Parks track a fortnight ago, but considering he was returning from a 10-month spell we anticipate he will only benefit from the run. He has shown throughout his career that he improves with a run under his belt, and with a record of 8: 3-3-0 on wet ground he is sure to take some beating. He’ll need to lug 60.5kg following Lachie Neindorf’s 2kg claim, but as a 69-rater in a BM64 he should have a bit on his rivals. With plenty of early speed engaged, look for Melody Man to be charging home late from the rear of the field.

Best Value at Morphettville: Zion
Another who comes to Morphettville second-up after a long layoff, the now Will Clarken-trained Zion presents great value in the second leg of the quaddie. Having won at Mornington second-up last time in under the care of Ciaron Maher & David Eustace, there is no doubt that he is a horse which likes firmer ground; however, as this is not the toughest BM64 going around, he looks to be a great value play. If Todd Pannell can find him cover in the moving line from barrier 15, this bloke – on his day – has the turn of foot to get the job done. With natural improvement between runs, we’re happy to be with Zion at a double-figure price with online bookmakers.
