First Race 11:39am ACST

Racing returns to the course proper at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon for a massive 10-race program. With plenty of rain in and around Adelaide in the lead up to the meeting, the track has come up a Soft 7, while the rail comes out 3m for the entire circuit. Despite the conditions, Morphettville is often a track that plays fairly, and we expect that to be the case this weekend. The day of racing kicks off at 11:39am ACST, with our best bet going around in the opener.

Best Bet at Morphettville: Miss Gobcain

The Mark Webb-trained Miss Gobcain has been in sensational form since coming to South Australia, registering a win two starts back before finishing second behind Ichibansan over 2000m here at Morphettville. The five-year-old is rock-hard fit, with this being her sixth run in this campaign and looks primed to step up to the 2500m. Despite this being a tactical affair in a small field of eight, the Americain mare should appreciate the genuinely run 2500m she gets here, considering she is a backmarker. Barend Vorster will have her moving through the gears with 600m to go, and although this will be her first go at the trip, Miss Gobcain looks to have a bit of a class edge on her rivals. We get better than even money with online bookmakers for a runner who relishes wet ground, so she could prove to be a nice bank-builder to set us up for the day.

Next Best at Morphettville: Taunting

Going from the first race to the last, we are hoping the Michael Hickmott-trained Taunting can pick up where he left off in his first-up win at Murray Bridge on August 6. The four-year-old gelding had not been seen in raceday conditions for almost 12 months but showed no signs of rust when destroying his rivals. The 1.4-length winning margin doesn’t tell half the story as he settled towards the rear of the field after being slowly away, stuck to the rail – which was clearly the inferior ground – and still managed to put a gap on his rivals. He draws barrier one for this assignment, and considering he has three wins and a second to his name at the trip, everything looks perfectly set up for Taunting to do his thing. Look for Jessica Eaton to lob him on the leaders’ heels throughout, and with even luck in the home straight, we expect Taunting to have too much class for this lot.

Best Value at Morphettville: Lake’s Folly

Let’s hope the Michael Hickmott & Jessica Eaton combination can leave Morphettville with at least a double, as we like their chances with Lake’s Folly in the fifth. The six-year-old gelding rarely knows how to run a bad race, and that shows this campaign with top-four finishes in all five runs. His last-start second at Murray Bridge saw him race close to the rail – the clear inferior going on that day – so he did well to be beaten just over a half-length in the end. He draws barrier three on Saturday and is sure to gain the perfect run in transit, hopefully in the one-one. He is the type of runner who needs to be hitting the front inside the final 50m, and if Jess Eaton can do that, Lake’s Folly looks a great play at an each-way price with most Australian betting sites.
