The Parks track at Morphettville is scheduled to host a nine-race card for Leon Macdonald Stakes Day, and HorseBetting’s South Australian horse racing expert presents his best bets and quaddie selections for Saturday’s meeting. The track is rated a Soft 6 with the rail in the true position throughout, and racing is set to commence at 12:01pm ACST (12:31pm AEST).
Leon Macdonald Stakes Top Tip: Ironclad
The feature event of the day is the Listed Leon Macdonald Stakes over 1400m. With race favourite Beau Rossa accepted into Saturday’s Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, we anticipate this will be a two-horse battle between the returning Ironclad and last-start Flemington winner Second Slip – both trained by Will Clarken. However, it is the resuming Ironclad that we have put on top as he looks to build on an autumn campaign that saw him string together four straight victories including two wins at Listed level. He has run in the top three on three occasions from four first-up runs and is one to follow going through the spring. Despite drawing the widest barrier on Saturday (#11), we anticipate Callan Murray will go forward on the son of Dubawi to sit outside the natural leader, Second Slip. Despite lacking race fitness compared to his rival, we expect the class of Ironclad to be the difference as he brings up a fifth win in succession.
Morphettville Best Bet: Bear Arms
The Jordan Frew-trained Bear Arms has been racing in career-best form, winning two of her past four starts, and is a proven wet-track specialist. All four of her career wins have come on tracks with the sting out of it, and despite stepping back to 2250m from the 2500m, we anticipate the Americain mare will be too hard to hold out. Bear Arms has an 8kg weight advantage on race favourite Classy Joe, and as long as she does not get held up for a run at a crucial time, she should be finishing over the top of her rivals with just 54kg on her back.
Next Best at Morphettville: Qeyaady
One of the better bets on the Morphettville program comes up in the opening event when Ben and JD Hayes send their resuming three-year-old Qeyaady over to Adelaide in search of more metropolitan success. Ben spoke high praises of this son of I Am Invincible following his win at Sandown on May 1, and following a 17-week spell we expect him to be hard to beat once more. The lightly raced colt will get the services of Jacob Opperman for the first time, and the apprentice’s 2kg claim brings the weight down to 60.5kg and gives Qeyaady a 1kg advantage on the market elect, Karacasu.
Best Value at Morphettville: Perfect Route
Mick Huxtable and Jessica Eaton are set to combine in the opening leg of the Morphettville quaddie with Perfect Group, who was no match for the likes of Behemoth and Beau Rossa in the Group 3 Spring Stakes last time out. Prior to that run, the five-year-old son of Good Journey had not finished worse than second in a race and had four wins to his name from six starts. He is clearly a horse with above-average ability, and we are willing to rule a line through that first-up run. From barrier two, we expect Eaton to lob him in the perfect position in the one-one, and despite needing to lug 60.5kg, he should prove hard to hold out a nice price.
