Morphettville Oaks Day Group 1 betting tips – Saturday, 2 May 2020
Saturday’s Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) and TAB Classic (1200m) kick off the first of four Group 1 races for the Adelaide Racing Carnival. The day will be highlighted by champion mare Sunlight looking to add a fourth Group 1 win to her repertoire. There looks to be plenty of rain around Morphettville this week, so we should expect to be racing on a wet surface. The rail is in the true position for the entire circumference.

The first of the Group 1 races on the program shapes as a very open event. Leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller has three live chances in the race, while the Dan O’Sullivan-trained filly Affair to Remember heads the betting at $5. With very little speed in the race, early tactics will prove vital come the business end. Sierra Sue maps to be the lamplighter from the outside barrier.
We are leaning towards Betcha Flying in what looks to be the toughest race on the program. Her win at Flemington last weekend was very good and she was strong through the line. Her previous run behind the very promising filly Collette at the 2000m was encouraging. From barrier 13, Dom Tourneur can cruise across the field and find a lovely spot in behind the speed. The Waller-trained filly will be suited by the quick back and we expect her to be too classy.
Selica is a stayer on the up and is a genuine each-way chance at $19. She was beaten a long way from home last start but kept fighting all the way to the post to finish only half a length back. This will be a slower-run race and up to the 2000m will suit her down to the ground. Kayla Crowther will need to produce one of her best rides if she is to get her Group 1 from gate 15, but she has the right horse under her.
Last time Vegas Jewel raced at 2000m and on a soft track she was beaten a neck by subsequent VRC Oaks winner Miami Bound. Forget her last start – it was too bad to be true. From barrier four, Jason Holder will be able to put her in a nice spot midfield. The wetter, the better with Miami Bound and we know she will get the trip.

TAB Robert Sangster Classic betting tips

The next Group 1 is the TAB Classic (aka Robert Sangster Stakes) for fillies and mares, headlined by the Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained Sunlight. They’ll go very quick in front with speed from Bella Vella, Away Game, Savatiano and Sunlight all looking for a spot on the speed.
The last three editions of this race have been won by a mare starting with the letter ‘S’ (Spright, Shoals and Secret Agenda), and we think we’ll see a case of history repeating itself with Sunlight here. Her second-up form is superb (4:3-0-1) and her class is unrivalled in a race like this. She will have to overcome one of the outside barriers, but we think she will be too good.
Teleplay was brilliant first up at Caulfield in finishing third behind Vainstream. She will get nearly the run of the race behind a strong tempo out of barrier two. She was a strong winner at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day last year before going on to win at Sandown. She is three from three on a soft track and the big circuit at Morphettville will suit her very well. Look for her finishing strongly.
Ciaron Maher and David Eustace saddle up the well-travelled 2yo filly Away Game. She gets in with just 47kg and is drawn perfectly in gate four. She will be up there in the early-speed battle, but her feather weight could give her the upper hand with 9.5kg less than most of her opposition. This will be her eighth career run in just her first preparation, so it will be some feat if she can go on with the job.
