HorseBetting’s Victorian racing analyst has run his eye over the eight-race meeting at Mornington set to be run on Sunday afternoon and has come up with his best bets, free quaddie numbers and top odds from Australia’s leading online bookmakers. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail returning to the true position, for the meeting commencing at 12:55pm AEST.

Mornington Best Bet: Degraves

We were with the Robert Hickmott-trained at Moonee Valley on September 4 and we anticipate he will be too hard to beat in Saturday’s feature the R.M Ansett Classic. The four-year-old son of Camelot steps up to the 2400m from the 2040m and is bred to handle the rise in distance. From barrier three, look for Jye McNeil to lob him in a perfect position in the moving line where he can then ask him for an effort with 600m to go and hopefully prove too strong late for some of these. Despite this being a tougher race than what he has been going around in during the winter and the start of spring, we expect Degraves to walk away with a first Stakes level since arriving in Australia.

Best BetRace 6 – Degraves (#4) $2.25 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Mornington: Starry Legend

The John Sadler-trained Starry Legend showed plenty of potential in his two-year-old campaign and we anticipate he will be too hard to run down on Sunday. Having been scratched from the 955m sprint at Moonee Valley on Friday night and saved for this, we expect he will be raring to go first up from a spell. Matthew Cartwright is a handy booking with his 2kg claim getting the three-year-old Zoustar colt with just 56.5kg. From barrier nine, look for young Cartwright to hunt for the rails over 1000m and in a race which looks to be bereft of an out and out leader, he should get a quiet time of it and ultimately prove too good for this lot.

Next BestRace 3 – Starry Legend (#7) $2.90 with Sportsbet

Mornington Best Value: The General

Having had four-weeks between runs and a trail between his last start win at Sandown, we anticipate The General will run a cheeky race at a price in the third leg of the quaddie. Having led all-the-way and kicked clear under Craig Williams with 57.5kg on his back and following Will Price’s claim on Sunday, he will go around with 58.5kg. From barrier 14, he will look to go forward and dictate terms throughout and if he can cross this field and lead comfortably the quote of $14 looks to be massive overs.

Best ValueRace 7 – The General (#4) $12 with Sportsbet
