Mornington Races 27th December Preview
A nine race card at Mornington rounds out a fantastic weekend of celebrations, beers, cricket and some quality racing as well. With a perfect summer’s day forecasted early on in the afternoon we’re set fair for a competitive card of racing on a Good 4 at Mornington. With the rail out to the 2m mark, you would expect there to be no distinct advantage anywhere in the running with each galloper getting their chance throughout the card.
The first at Mornington is set to 12:25pm AEDT.
Hopefully the impressive form of Matt Laurie trained gallopers can continue through to the final event on the Mornington card where Evie Girl is looking to build on her impressive campaign to date. Having finished in the top two in each of her last three runs, including a win at Moonee Valley two starts ago, she is racing in career best form this campaign. Having gotten the gun draw of barrier one, Noel Callow should be able to get Evie Girl into a positive position in the running and if she is afforded any sort of luck when entering the home straight she will be incredibly hard to hold out in the ‘Get Out’.
We were with the Shane Nichols trained Zakurak for his last start second at Geelong when going around as a well backed odds-on favourite. He seemingly had the run of the race and perhaps should have finished closer than what he did, but we’re happy to give him another chance here at Mornington. Having drawn the rails we are expecting Matthew Cartwright to get Zakurak into a similar position as to what he found himself in at Geelong. If he runs up to the form of his first two runs this campaign, there doesn’t look to be much capable of running him down in this BM58.
The Robert Kingston trained Sophia’s Choice steps back from a BM78 at Flemington a fortnight ago to contest this BM70 back at a country level on Sunday. Despite finishing worse than midfield at Flemington, she threw away any chance she may have had after messing up the start of her race and never really being in the hunt after that. She gets back to Mornington where she was successful three starts back at her only start at the track, and considering she has only one start over the 1200m for one win, all signs point to a very competitive showing.
