2021 Mornington Cup betting preview

The featured event of the nine-race card at Mornington on Saturday afternoon is the Listed Mornington Cup, which offers a golden ticket into the 2021 Caulfield Cup for the winner. This year’s edition has attracted a field of 12 with six black-type race successes between them, headed by $3.20 favourite Mount Popa from the Hawkes yard.

The speed in the race looks to come from either Irish Flame, with the market leader sitting just off their heels. Lord Belvedere and Defibrillate are expected to settle towards the rear of the field.

It is hard to ignore Chapada in the Mornington Cup. While he will give his rivals a fair head start, which can often be tricky to make up at Mornington, we expect the Herbert Power Stakes winner from the spring to be savaging the line late in an attempt to get himself into another Caulfield Cup.

Mount Popa has a bright future, but this will be just his second start in Melbourne on the back of a fourth-place finish at Flemington last year. Coming off an impressive win in the Randwick City Stakes over 2000m a fortnight ago, he should find no issue stepping up to 2400m in this third-up assignment. The Hawkes-trained gelding has won over 2400m on two occasions but has finished no better than second in two third-up starts, suggesting he does his best work fresh.
