First Race 01:00pm AEDT

Mornington hosts the first of two Victorian gallops meetings on Friday afternoon where eight races are set down for judgement. The track has come up as a Good 4 and with the rail out 8m the entire circuit, it may pay dividends to follow the first couple of races to see how the track is playing early on. Clear skies are forecast as we look to build a bank for the races at The Valley on Friday night and into a massive weekend ahead. The first at Mornington is set to jump at 1pm AEDT.

Best Bet: Race 5 – Spensierato (#2)

The Nick Ryan-trained daughter of Fiorente looks to be the best bet on the Mornington card in the opening leg of the quaddie. In her three runs to date she has strung together a hat trick of runner up performances, including the last two as a well backed favourite. From barrier four she maps to get an economical run one out, one back and should be too strong for this BM58 field on Friday. Rhys McLeod has had 11 rides aboard Spensierato and has done no better than five runner up performances, but Friday looks to be the day.

Next Best: Race 7 – Black Opal (#2)

Fresh off three competitive runs in town, the John Moloney trained Black Opal looks well placed to bring up his second win of this long campaign. He is a genuine front runner and will make sure a genuine tempo is set throughout the race, and with favourable conditions for leaders expected we’re backing him to get the job done in the third leg of the quaddie. Having drawn barrier one for this assignment he will use all the advantages in the running and prove hard to run down. You can check Black Opal’s odds at the top racing betting sites.

Best Value: Race 4 – Sense Of Doubt (#4)

The Dabernig and Hayes trained Sense Of Doubt is coming off a midfield finish at Kilmore on January 12. He’s the most experienced runner in the field having had 10 starts, but has not necessarily consistenct, yet we are happy to side with him in what looks to be a thin maiden. He got rolled as a $1.60 favourite two starts back, and no matter the price he runs around at on Friday it looks to be value in this race. If he can’t break through here, will he ever?
