Mornington preview

What Mornington Races
Where Mornington Racecourse – 320 Racecourse Rd, Mornington VIC 3931
When Tuesday, December 13, 2022
First Race 1:30pm AEDT

Racing heads to Mornington Racecourse on Tuesday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program. The track is listed as a Good 4, however, we’ve got plenty of rain on the way, so we expect to be racing on the Soft 7 to Heavy 8 range if the rain does hit the track. The rail has moved out +8m for the meeting so hopefully we’ll be playing on a fair track with conditions being the biggest factor on Tuesday. The first race is set to get underway at 1:30pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Mornington: Tiz My Bay

Tiz My Bay looks a clear best of the day on Tuesday afternoon in the first race of the card. She’s second-up here over the 1500m and should be too classy for this lot after an impressive effort first-up at Sale over the 1400m. She was last turning for home and only missed by a nostril and really should’ve been breaking her maiden status on that occasion. Going back through her form from last preparation it reads phenomenal in maiden company, with runs behind VRC Oaks winner Willowy and prior to that, runs behind classy types such as Daises and Group 1 winner Glint Of Hope. If she doesn’t win this race on Tuesday, it may find itself in the forget file. Patrick Maloney takes the reins here and should find the one-by-one with relative ease, provided this daughter of Cable Bay lobs there, it should be all over well before the line.

Next Best at Mornington: Bel Thronum

We’ll be looking for back-to-back wins here with our next best set to run in the second race on the program. The Patrick Keane-trained Middle Child doesn’t look too far away from breaking her maiden status as she’s her third-up over the 1200m on Tuesday. She’s got a great pattern of racing with her looking to ping the lids from barrier-seven and jockey Joe Bowditch will look to do just that, with a speed map that doesn’t seem to have too much tempo on paper. She’ll be in this contest a long way out and has form on a wet track as her latest effort at Geelong on November 22 can attest too. She did the same thing that day when leading and just got run down beaten a half length to a smart one in Mr Invincible. This looks a much easier task for Middle Child.

Best Value at Mornington: Tan Tat Magic

The penultimate race on the program looks a wide-open affair which is why we’re happy to side with Tan Tat Magic as our best value runner of the afternoon. She was impressive winning first-up at Tatura over the 1000m in maiden company on November 19, she sat in behind the speed before peeling out and was only improving going past the post to score by 0.2 lengths. She looks to step up to 1200m here which doesn’t look to be an issue, the only minor concern is her form on wet ground does look suspect, however, we can’t ignore how good she was first-up and can only improve here. Peter Moody has this filly going well and has elect to put apprentice jockey Emily Pozman in the saddle here with a useful 4kg claim, so Tan Tat Magic gets no weight penalty for her maiden win. This daughter of Street Boss looks progressive and hopefully she can reproduce that first-up effort again on Tuesday afternoon.

Best Value

Race 7 – Silk #7 Tan Tat Magic (11)

3yo Filly | T: Peter Moody | J: Emily Pozman (a4) (60.5kg)
