TRAINER Peter Morgan believes his colt Sircconi has plenty of improvement left in it after a fantastic front-running finish in the National Jockey’s Trust Handicap at Caulfield.

After finding the front early in the piece, Linda Meech kept the three-year-old up to the task as the late closers attempted to cut the horse down, winning by a head on the line to return $13 at WilliamHill.com.au.

Wyndspelle ($5.70 at Crownbet.com.au) stormed home late but could not find the line in time, while the late firmer on the track So Si Bon, which returned $2 at Ladbrokes.com.au, stormed home from the back of the field but never looked like a winning a hope.

Sircconi was not only the winner but the horse to follow from the race, and Meech said she had a point to prove aboard the horse.

“I almost cried the other day when I wasn’t on him at the trials,” Meech said.

“I had a little tantrum, but Pete’s stuck with me.”

Meech believes the colt has a bright future ahead of it.

“He’s a really exciting horse.

“He’s got everything, I think he’s got the brain and the build. He’s just a ripper.”

The win for the three-year-old belied the inexperience that the horse should have been disadvantaged by, holding out strong to the line after being challenged hard.

Despite the strong win, trainer Peter Morgan said it has not been the easiest ride for Sircconi.

“He’s been a bit of a headache for me,” Morgan said.

“He ended up with a little virus a fortnight ago … it gets a bit tough when you’re playing catch up all the time and I’m not sure where we’ll go next, we might have to back him up from a 1400m to a 1800m if I’m going to go to the Caulfield Classics.”

Morgan sounded an ominous warning to upcoming rivals, stating his colt is yet to hit full fitness.

“He’s still a little bit under done, I reckon he’s only 85 percent right,” the trainer elaborated.

“I’d should imagine he’d have three or four lengths. He’s always been a hard horse to keep weight off so I think he’ll improve a lot on that.”
