Morphettville racing preview

A rare Friday twilight meeting at Morphettville provides an early Christmas treat for punters heading into the festive season. With a perfect summer’s day for racing on the forecast, each runner should get a chance if they are good enough to push their claims. The track is rated a Good 4 at the time of writing, the rail is set in the true position, and the first at Morphettville will jump at 3:40pm ACDT.

Best BetRace 7 – Munster (#4) $3 with Sportsbet

We were with Munster for his second-up assignment in Australia, but he was vulnerable late and just lacking a touch of race fitness. The Robert Hickmott-trained galloper is on the quick six-day backup here and maps to get a quiet time of it up in front. The query is he hasn’t won since his debut victory in New Zealand, but he will never get a better opportunity than this to register his second career win. This will be the first time in his short career that the four-year-old gelding has had a third-up run, but he looks primed to get the job done in an all-the-way victory.

Next BestRace 8 – Li’l Hank (#8) $12 with Sportsbet

We have been a fan of Li’l Hank this campaign. Despite winning on just one occasion from eight runs, the five-year-old gelding has never been too far away from the finish. We’re expecting him to run one hell of a race in the final event on the card, as he is yet to miss a placing at Morphettville and over the mile. He maps to do nothing in the running and should prove hard to hold out with a little bit of luck down the home straight.

Best ValueRace 6 – Journica (#2) $10 with Sportsbet

We think there are a few good plays towards the back end of the card, and that includes this four-year-old gelding from the Gordon Richards stable. Journica won three starts back in harder company than this and now drops back in grade from a BM76 to a BM58. Despite the wide barrier draw, he looks set to play a crucial role in the finish. He gets in well at the weights after the claim for apprentice Stacey Metcalfe and will take some holding out at nice odds in the second leg of the quaddie.
