Moonee Valley Vase Betting Preview
The Moonee Valley Vase for three-year-olds over 2040m is the final lead up into next weekend’s VRC Derby. Run at Group 2 level, a field of just nine runners has been assembled, which sees Young Werther start the $2.35 favourite, ahead of Cherry Tortoni, Khoekhoe and Lunar Fox. There looks to be a bit of speed on paper, with Tanker, Captain Corelli and Sarodec all likely to contest poll position. Young Werther should get a lovely run behind the speed from barrier four.
2020 Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase Betting Preview
6. Young WertherWe are all in with Young Werther after the gelding was a good thing licked last start behind Khoekhoe. He had no luck in the run when he only got out very late and hit the line strongly, suggesting up to 2000m will be ideal for him. Being by Tavistock, we know he will get the trip no worries at all and he should handle the wet track. Damien Oliver will park behind the leaders and be looking to bounce back after copping plenty of criticism three weeks ago. This horse is the current VRC Derby favourite, so he should be winning this.
2. Lunar Fox
Lunar Fox put in a great run when fifth in the Caulfield Guineas and looks the perfect horse to appreciate the rise in trip. Two starts back he finished fourth to Glenfiddich at this track which he appeared to handle well enough to suggest he will go well here. He is a Group 2 winner at Flemington from the Autumn on a soft track where he beat home Ole Kirk, so we think he will be right up to this.
7. Johnny Get Angry
Johnny Get Angry looks a horse that will get better the further he runs, so we think he can be a horse to improve up to 2040m and be filling third place. He is still a maiden after five starts, but his last start fourth behind Khoekhoe, Young Werther and Albarado was very impressive, coming from last at the 800m to be beaten less than 2L. He is by Tavistock out of a Zabeel mare, so his pedigree suggests he is a dour stayer, and while we think he is better suited to big open tracks like Flemington, we believe that if Lachie King gets on his bike early to wind him up he can add value to the multiples.
