For the second weekend in a row, Moonee Valley is scheduled to host a nine-race card on Saturday afternoon. Australia Stakes Top Tip – Marabi
The Group 2 Australia Stakes over 1200m is the feature event on the Moonee Valley card, and we anticipate the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Marabi can continue her undefeated streak. Having smashed her rivals in the Listed Christmas Stakes on December 26, the five-year-old I Am Invincible mare looks well-placed in a field that is no harder than what she faced last time out. Regular jockey Ben Allen hops back on board and from barrier four should have no issue in finding the front and dictating terms throughout. Considering she will most likely gain an uncontested lead and the fact she is undefeated from two starts at the track and distance, Marabi looks a near moral in the Australia Stakes.
Moonee Valley Best Bet – Americain Angel
Our best bet comes up early in the day when last-start winner Americain Angel looks to string together consecutive victories for the first time in her career. The Danny O’Brien-trained mare out of Americain is as honest as they come, having finished in the top three in all but one of her 11 career starts. Jamie Kah – who sticks on board on Saturday – had the bay mare settled closer to the speed than usual at Caulfield on December 26, which proved to be the winning manoeuvre. From barrier six, we expect Kah to adopt similar tactics this time around, and in the small field of seven she should not be too far from the speed throughout. With a sharp turn of foot, the $4.40 on offer from Sportsbet for Americain Angel looks to be a steal.
Next Best Bet at Moonee Valley – Gentleman Roy
In the opening leg of the quaddie, we will be hoping the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Gentleman Roy can find himself back in the winner’s stall following a narrow defeat at Caulfield on December 26. Despite looking like he had the race shot to pieces inside the final furlong, the five-year-old son of So You Think folded up late and found one better. He stays at the mile on Saturday, and from barrier 11, Luke Nolen will look to have him settled outside the leader throughout. With race fitness and impressive form on his side, Gentleman Roy will almost certainly appreciate the tight surrounds of The Valley and should prove too hard to run down.
Moonee Valley Value Bet – Kev’s Girl
In the penultimate race of the day, we are hoping the Adam Chambers-trained Kev’s Girl can make it two wins from her past three starts when she steps out over 1000m. The four-year-old mare out of Star Witness was a smart winner two starts back over the 955m when leading all the way and keeping out a wall of chasers. From barrier 10, Dean Holland will need to be positive early on, but if Kev’s Girl can settle outside the race leader, her fitness could be beneficial late on. Under a well-rated steer, we are more than happy to take the $10 available.
