Racing returns to Moonee Valley for a nine-part card for the Carlyon Stakes meeting on Saturday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections with odds from Australia’s leading online bookmakers. The track is rated a Good 4 with the rail in the true position throughout, and the meeting is set to commence at 12:50pm AEST.
Carlyon Stakes Top Tip: Miss Albania
On the back of a smart at Flemington on August 7, Miss Albania should be too speedy and race-fit for this lot in the Listed Carlyon Stakes. Having beat home the smart duo of Oxley Road and Deep Speed, the Enver Jusufovic-trained mare will look to roll forward and sit outside expected leader Ancestry. That horse is a track specialist but only one win first-up, and Miss Albania – who comes to The Valley third-up – should have a clear fitness edge on her rivals. She gets the services of Jamie Kah for the first time, and as long as she does not get trapped three wide without cover from barrier seven, she should prove too hard to go past in the Carlyon Stakes.
McKenzie Stakes Top Tip: Jigsaw
We were with Jigsaw last time out when he finished third behind Rock Artist over 1000m here on July 31, and despite that result, we are willing to give him another chance in the Listed McKenzie Stakes. The Cindy Alderson-trained colt drops 3kg off that run, and that will only benefit his chances. Despite drawing the wide barrier of nine, we anticipate Ben Melham will look to settle the son of Manhattan Rain outside the leader and let his class do the rest. Key market rival Hilal is a dual acceptor in the Group 3 Show County at Randwick on Saturday, and if he is scratched from the McKenzie Stakes at The Valley, it will be Jigsaw’s race to lose.
Moonee Valley Best Bet: Corner Pocket
Our best bet at The Valley comes when the Lindsey Smith-trained Corner Pocket returns to the track looking for a seventh straight win. This is a horse who greets every new challenge with great aplomb and simply keeps winning. As always at Moonee Valley it will be advantageous to be up on speed when the rail is in the true position on a Good 4, and Corner Pocket from barrier one should have no qualms in finding the rail. He has four wins from five starts on firm decks and has won six times from seven starts under Declan Bates, so the pair look a clear best bet on Saturday’s card.
Next Best at Moonee Valley: Heart Of Puissance
The second leg of the quaddie marks the return of the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Heart Of Puissance from a three-month spell. He went to the paddock on the back of a three-length victory at Flemington on May 22 in a race where you did not want to be on anyone else but him. A key tip heading into the race is that Jamie Kah retains the ride despite having been paired with Grand Promenade throughout that horse’s remarkable campaign. Heart Of Puissance has one win from one start at The Valley, has saluted first-up in the past and should be simply too hard to hold out as he begins his march towards the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup.
Moonee Valley Value Bet: Sovereign Award
The Danny O’Brien-trained Sovereign Award returns to a track she has a true love affair with, having won four times from five starts at The Valley. She was last seen running in Group 1 company during The Championships, and despite having won once last campaign in four runs, we expect she will appreciate getting back to the track she loves. Damian Lane hops back on board and will look to use barrier two to his advantage and have the mare lead this field up. If she is afforded a quiet time in the running and can settle in the running, we anticipate she will run a cheeky race and ultimately prove hard to run down.
