Racing returns to Moonee Valley on Friday night for a bumper eight-race card headlined by the Alister Clark Stakes. With Damien Oliver on board from barrier 12, the plan looks to be a simple one, find the rail and make this a genuinely run 2040m affair. Having begun his campaign with three successive wins, with all of them coming on firm decks, he is sure to appreciate the conditions served up to him at The Valley. He looks to be the natural leader on paper and despite the quality of El Patroness and the underrated Prix De Turn going around in the race, Castlereagh Kid should prove too hard to run down in the Group 2 Alister Clark Stakes on his way to an Australian Derby.
Abell Stakes Top Tip – In The Boat
We were with the Lindsey Smith-trained In The Boat at Caulfield back on February 12 where he simply did not see out the 1400m when tiring late to run third. He comes back to the 1200m a trip he has two wins from as many starts at and with just 54kg on his back looks the one to run down in the Abell Stakes. Having strung together four successive wins before that faulter at Caulfield, the four-year-old gelding is sure to take some catching here. Having beaten subsequent Group winner Marine One three starts back, the form stacks up in a race like this and should he gain a couple of quiet sectionals out in front, In The Boat looks a great bet.
Moonee Valley Best Bet – Eaglemont
The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained Eaglemont is coming off a dominant six length victory at Ballarat on February 20 and if the track remains in the Good range, he looks one of the best bets on the night. Having struggled on rain-affected going during winter last year, he stepped back on a firmer deck for the first time since coming to Australia and looked to have been a different horse. He gets similar conditions on Friday night and with John Allen on board from barrier nine, look for him to settle in the one-one and if he does not get trapped wide, the race could be all over within the first 200m. Eaglemont is a clear best bet of the night.
