AUSTRALIAN-performed mare Miss Wilson has made easy work of a talented field of sprinters in the Group 3 Spring Sprint at Hastings on Sunday.

The John Bary-trained five-year-old was positioned just behind the leader coming into the turn before jockey Sam Collett left the rail and pounced on Shadow Fox in the blink of an eye, returning $2.50 at Neds.com.au after opening at $3.50.

“Riding horses like her makes my job easy,” said Collett, who was successful aboard Prom Queen on Saturday. “She jumped and put herself into the race.

“They didn’t go as fast as I thought they might go. I had to bide my time and wait for my opportunity to get off the fence.”

Collett knew she had a powerful sprinter underneath her with Miss Wilson having performed well in the Australian sprinting ranks.

“She’s a classy mare having won the Cuddle Stakes at two. I knew what she was capable of and she put them away,” she said.

Representing the stable was Chouxmanni Investments owner, Richard Wood, who famously raced stallion Jimmy Choux during its champion career.

Wood was pleased to see a firmer track for the five-year-old which is the half-sister to Jimmy Choux.

“It’s been a long wait for a firm track and we’ve got one today. We got the result,” Wood said. “She’s a lovely mare and she just needed the opportunity.

“The hard track, the good draws and she’ll be hard to beat.”

Wood said the six-time race winner will likely target the Group 1 Captain Cook later this campaign.

“I think John is heading to the Captain Cook in Wellington, track dependant,” Wood explained. “He is talking about going to Tauranga first, but we’ll just wait and see.

“She’s a great looker, she’s from a great family and she’ll make a great broodmare.”

Sam Collett believes it’s good enough to contend at group one level, given that it will get in well on the weights at handicap conditions.

“I don’t see why not. She’s only progressing and it’s only her third start this time in,” Collett said. “She’s come in a lot stronger this time and I know John and the team are happy with her.

“She deserves a group one – a handicap will suit her down to the ground and hopefully I’ll ride her there, too.”
