First Race 12:30pm AEST

Racing heads to northwest Victoria on Friday afternoon for the Mildura Cup, and HorseBetting’s Victorian form expert presents his best bets and free quaddie selections for the town’s marquee meeting. The eight-race card is set to be run on a Soft 5 with the rail in the true position, and the first is set to go at 12:30pm AEST.

Mildura Cup Top Tip: Street Tough

In the featured Mildura Cup, the Will Clarken-trained Street Tough is the one we want to be with over the 1400m event worth $100,000. The six-year-old son of Tough Speed has had two runner-up performances at Murray Bridge to begin his campaign but looks well placed to take out the Mildura Cup. He was held up for a run at a crucial time when finishing third on July 3 and was a moral beaten by under a half-length. From barrier three, we anticipate Dean Holland to have him settled one off the rail where he can take luck out of the occasion. If he is afforded that early luck, he has the sharpest turn of foot in the race and looks the clear top tip in the Cup.

Mildura Best Bet: Irish Butterfly

Our best bet at Mildura comes up in the second leg of the quaddie, when the Henry Dwyer-trained Irish butterfly returns to Victoria following a win at Murray Bridge on July 3. The five-year-old son of O’Reilly managed to box seat at Murray Bridge and was doing his best work late over 1800m to suggest he will appreciate the step up to 2000m. From barrier seven, jockey John Allen will need a little bit of luck early on, but if he is afforded that luck there is no reason why Irish Butterfly cannot make it consecutive wins with a gritty staying win.

Mildura Best Value: Secret Hero

The Patrick Payne-trained Secret Hero has been a favourite of ours in recent weeks on the synthetic track and he finally broke through for a maiden win last time out on July 13. Having started his campaign with two straight runner-up performances, Christine Puls managed dictate terms throughout before the son of Von Costa de Hero kicked away nicely. This will be Secret Hero’s second ever start on turf, but with confidence on his side this time around we think he presents good value in the opening leg of the quaddie.
