Can Soulcombe win the 2023 Melbourne Cup?
Soulcombe is the first of four Chris Waller-trained runners to gain entry into the 2023 Melbourne Cup and may be his best chance to win the race since Verry Elleegant in 2021.
The gelding by Frankel has been progressing nicely throughout the campaign, despite having a clear inability to jump from the stalls. He bombed the start completely in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) behind Without A Fight, before chasing home gamely to be defeated 5.5 lengths.
Chris Waller has called the ‘Magic Man’ Joao Moreira to take the reins in this year’s Cup, hopefully getting the five-year-old to at least jump evenly.
Soulcombe would be a genuine chance in this race, but can you trust his barrier manners? That’s the real question.

Can Soulcombe win the 2023 Melbourne Cup?
There is no doubt that Soulcombe is a genuine winning chance on Tuesday. However, his barrier manners in recent times have been disgusting, continually missing the start by a margin. He missed the kick by six-lengths in the Caulfield Cup and was forced to do much work after giving up such a start. Joao Moreira has taken the reigns in an attempt to get Soulcombe out of the gates in a more efficient manner. If Soulcombe can jump with them, he will be making his run and potentially appearing the winner at one point or another. However, with too many doubts about his starts, he is another we are happy to take on in the 2023 Melbourne Cup.
