2020 McKenzie Stakes betting preview
The Listed McKenzie Stakes is the fifth race of nine at Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon. After the scratching of Alleboom, we are left with just seven runners to compete for the $140,000 prize pool. The McKenzie Stakes is generally a punter’s paradise, with four of the past seven favourites going on to salute in the race.
Deep Speed is one of our best bets for Moonee Valley on Saturday. He drifted in the betting late on Stakes Day when running into a couple of handy types, but he should relish getting back to The Valley, where he was a dominant winner two starts back. He drops 3kgs off his effort in the Listed Springtime Stakes, and if Luke Currie can settle him up in front, there’s no reason to say he can’t win this.
It’s hard to knock the return performances Nicolini Vito put in at Kilmore and then at The Valley. He was afforded no favours throughout his run at Kilmore when travelling wide throughout without cover, yet he kicked clear to score by over three lengths. He backed up that performance with some big strides late to run down Ilovethegame late a fortnight ago. If he brings that form to the McKenzie Stakes, he will give the favourite a fair old contest.
If we’re happy to back Nicolini Vito, it would be silly to leave out Ilovethegame. Greg Eurell’s runner looked to have done enough last time out over this track and distance a fortnight ago and will only benefit from that first-up effort. From barrier two, Damien Oliver may opt to take a sit on the leaders this time around and look to come along the rails, if that is the spot to be on Saturday. He’s double the price of the runner who only nabbed him on the line when they last met, and he should be right in the finish if he runs up to that performance here.
