Matt Cameron bounces back from concussion for Australian Guineas

XtravagantNEW Zealand jockey Matt Cameron has been confirmed to ride Xtravagant for the 2016 Australian Guineas on March 5.

Cameron suffered a serious fall at Matamata last week which resulted in a concussion, but he has recovered in time to ride the Kiwi superstar in the group 1 feature at Flemington.

Cameron rode the current $4.50 favourite to an eight-length victory in Saturday’s Group 1 Waikato Sprint and the connections will be hoping the pair can reunite at its first try on Australian soil.

“Matt knows the horse like no-one else, what he likes and what he doesn’t like, and there’s no doubt in our minds that he’s the man for the job,” Te Akau chief David Ellis said.

“All he’s got to prove to me is he’s 100 percent and over this fall and he’s got the ride.”

Cameron is also looking to ride Hasselhoof in the Parramatta Cup at Rosehill this Saturday, but he will need medical clearance. Cameron was passed fit to ride in New Zealand on Friday by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing.

“It’s official, having completed a series of examinations I have the all clear from NZTR to resume raceday riding,” Cameron tweeted.

As for Xtravagant, its trainers are pleased with how it pulled up after demolishing a quality field at Te Rapa on Saturday.

“Looking at him yesterday you wouldn’t know he’d had a run,” co-trainer Stephen Autridge said.

“What we have to do is keep him ticking over, step it up again and send him across during the week beforehand with all the serious work done at home.”

Xtravagant heads a classy market for the Australian Guineas, which includes the likes of Palentino, Mahuta and the Mike Moroney-trained duo Tarzino and Tivaci.
