Jack Martin’s midweek city winner on White Devon at Sandown has come at a cost with the apprentice suspended for careless riding.

Martin guided the seven-year-old mare to a frontrunning victory in Wednesday’s Ladbrokes Odds Boost Multi Handicap (1600m) but was later outed for eight meetings after pleading guilty to careless riding at the 1100m.

Stewards said Martin shifted across to the lead when not sufficiently clear of fellow apprentice Melissa Julius on eventual runner-up All Day every Day, resulting in that horse having to be steadied.

Martin’s suspension is due to start after he rides at Caulfield on Saturday.

He is booked for four Caulfield rides including last-start Sandown winner Fully Maxed in the $150,000 VOBIS Gold Ingot.

Michael Dee was also suspended for eight meetings for careless riding aboard Sleepy Cat in the Spicer Thoroughbreds Handicap (2400m) at Sandown, with his ban to also start after the Caulfield meeting, which is the final city meeting of 2016/17.
