HorseBetting’s Queensland form analyst brings you his top three selections for Saturday’s $500,000 Magic Millions National Classic (previously known as the Sapphire Stakes) at Eagle Farm. The 1600m event for fillies and mares at weight-for-age level has attracted a field of 13 mares including Doncaster Mile winner Nettoyer, who shares betting favouritism at $5.50 with Nudge, winner of the Group 3 Pam O’Neill Stakes at Doomben a fortnight ago. In Good Health ($7) is likely to lead this field, while Fabric ($16) and Purrfect Deal ($34) are also going to be handy to the speed. We all have horses that win when we aren’t on – or even more specifically, beat something we’ve loaded up on in a photo – and for us, that horse is Nettoyer. This mare has only won two races in the past 14 months, with both of them coming at Group 1 level over 1600m in the Doncaster Mile and Queen of the Turf at odds of $41 and $31 respectively. The seven-year-old daughter of Sebring was recently sold at the National Broodmare Sale for $900,000, with her new owners electing to give her one more run in what looks a perfect race at WFA level. The Wendy Roche runner’s last-start fourth in the Doomben Cup was very good, and the fact that James McDonald does the steering from barrier four further adds to her credentials. When you break it down, the $6 is probably a great bet.

The way that Yamazaki dropped on her rivals at the Gold Coast two starts back was a sight to behold, coming from worse than midfield to win by 2.25 lengths at Listed level. The Matt Dunn-trained mare then finished second in the Pam O’Neill at Doomben after being ridden upside down, up on the speed, after getting a torrid run early on the back of a slow tempo. Staying at the mile and on to a firm Eagle Farm surface should be ideal, and from barrier seven, the Real Saga mare is going to get a much better run in transit just off the speed. She can improve and be hard to beat in this.

If you watch TV, you’ll know the Sportsbet ad potting ‘silly omen bets’, but one mare who comes into this with terrific form and has a strong omen around her is John O’Shea’s Rocha Clock. This race is set to jump at 3:13pm, and the Pierro mare happens to be #3 and will jump from barrier 13, so there’s your omen bet of the day. In saying that, the four-year-old comes into this on the back of two straight wins at Randwick and Scone, taking out the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic in impressive style. The wide barrier is not ideal, but Rachel King knows this mare well and understands that her best racing is done when she is ridden cold, so we expect her to be back near last anyway. The big Eagle Farm straight will suit, as will the firm track. Rocha Clock is certainly not the worst in this.
