Mackay horse racing preview – January 27, 2021
Eight races will be run and won at Mackay on Wednesday afternoon. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position for the entire course. Race 1 will jump at 1:38pm local time.
Best Bet: Fanaar
Trinity Bannon will send around one of the shortest-priced favourites of the afternoon, and while it looks an easy way out for us in tipping him, we believe it is simply a put in, take out job. The four-year-old gelding was flying at the beginning of last campaign, winning three of his first six races and running second in photo finishes on two occasions. He then joined the Schweida stable in Southeast Queensland, where he didn’t quite hold his own but still raced well behind some good ones like Beaufort Park. Back to a Class 6 on his home track, he just has to win.

Next Best: Roadhouse
Olivia Cairns will leg up Ash Butler on her promising gelding Roadhouse. The lightly raced four-year-old has had just the two starts, winning on debut at this track and then going down to a handy one at Toowoomba while putting a gap on the third horse. He’s since been back to the trials, where he was given a soft time behind Real Ana at Rockhampton. He does have to overcome the outside alley, but Butler should be able to cruise over and slot in one out, one back. This is a race that Roadhouse can win.

Best Value: Sirfina
Now, we aren’t knocking Overseas, but he could be the vulnerable favourite on a card that has a shorty in every race. Cody Collis will take 3kg off the back of Sirfina, which will suit given he’ll be rolling along up on the speed. The four-year-old was dominant here three starts back before struggling at Rockhampton on the big straight. At his latest he was runner-up to Busted Up, who looks extremely talented, so there is merit in that. If he can get a good enough time of it in front, he will take some catching.
