Lindsay Park team gearing up for spring

Lindsay Park co-trainer Tom Dabernig is already looking ahead to the spring.

Winter may be in its early stages but the big stables are already gearing up for spring.

Lindsay Park has a number of its big guns in work at Euroa while several others are just days away from returning to the stable.

Those in work already include imports Harlem, Ventura Storm, Poetic Dream, Fidaawy and Jaameh.

Dabernig said the warmer than expected weather during April and May allowed the ones that spelled at Lindsay Park a good break.

He said those that have returned to work are given extra paddock time during the day and then boxed at night.

“What we do is in the first month we give them light work and then paddock them during the day,” Dabernig said.

“And as the nights are cold and miserable we then box them at night.”

Dabernig is expecting a big spring from German import Poetic Dream who had one run, finishing fifth, at Flemington during the autumn.

He had his campaign stopped after suffering a bruised hock when he kicked out on the float on his return to the country stable at Euroa.

“The vets said we should give him a bit of a break,” Dabernig said.

“We were lucky that we had that warm period in April and May so he actually got a good spell.

“He potentially could be a real top horse for us, but is still a bit unknown.

“His trial at Werribee showed him up but then he disappointed at Flemington as he was in the perfect spot but didn’t quite do what we thought he could.

“But some of these imports can take a few runs. I’m sure he’ll be better in the spring as he basically got off the plane and went straight into work.”

Dabernig said Ventura Storm had undergone soft palate surgery since finishing ninth in the Sydney Cup and he believed there was a good race in store during the spring.

“He and Harlem maybe a length or two of the real good ones, but Harlem won the Australian Cup and they could easily land one if they were in the right mood on the day,” he said.
