Le Romain takes out 2016 Group 1 Randwick Guineas

LE Romain has upset odds-on favourite Press Statement to claim the $1 million Randwick Guineas.

The Kris Lees-trained three-year-old stole a break on Press Statement at the 200m and held on bravely to win the group 1 race on Saturday.

Press Statement, the Caulfield Guineas winner who was a prohibitive favourite after a first-up victory in the Hobartville Stakes, raced between horses in a midfield position with Le Romain directly on his outside.

As Hugh Bowman had to wait to get proper running with Press Statement, Christian Reith seized the opportunity to put his mount into the race.

Le Romain established a clear lead and the post loomed too quickly for Press Statement to peg back the margin.

“He’s just kept handling every step we’ve put in front of him,” Lees said.

Outsider Gold Ambition ran on from well back to fill the trifecta.
