Racing will return to Launceston this Sunday with a competitive nine-race program highlighted by the Listed Gold Sovereign Stakes for the two-year-olds. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, and with a bit of rain forecast on Saturday but warm, drying weather on Sunday, we should get to a perfect Good 4 rating come race day. The rail will be in the 7.5m position from the 1200m mark to the winning post and in the +6m position for the remainder of the circuit. The first race will jump at 12:20pm AEDT.
Gold Sovereign Stakes Tip: Needs Sugar
The Gold Sovereign Stakes is the feature race of the day, with the Listed two-year-old event featuring a few horses who met last start and come through the Listed Elwick Stakes, which looks to be the right form reference. The winner of the Elwick Stakes, Needs Sugar, will be the runner that we will be siding with due to the margin and dominance of her maiden win. This daughter of Needs Further had been very unlucky in her previous two starts, finishing second at both, before breaking her maiden in the Elwick Stakes in dominant fashion beating Thespian Waters and Encounter Sphere by three lengths eased down. The other form references and the form from the trials hasn’t showed us that something will be able to make up the three length gap on Needs Sugar, therefore, she should be winning again.

Best Bet at Launceston: Thelma
Our best bet of the day at Launceston will be Thelma from the Brendan McShane yard, who won first-up two starts back this preparation and went down by the barest of margins last start behind Gee Gee Als Prince, with both starts coming over 1200m. This five-year-old mare has returned in great form this campaign and may have found the form that saw her finish second behind Hela in her three-year-old season and third behind the same horse in the 1000 Guineas. This daughter of Helmet has a very good record at the Launceston track, with two wins and four placings from seven starts. Bulent Muhcu will take the ride again after riding her at both starts this preparation and from barrier four we should see this mare jump and push forward to take up the lead. With very little pressure expected, Muhcu should get going early and look to kick clear at the top of the straight and give them something to catch in the final 200m.

Next Best at Launceston: Super Swoop
After recording his first win of the preparation last start, we will be siding with Super Swoop to go back-to-back when he takes on the Sydeston Cup over 2100m in the penultimate event of the day. This eight-year-old gelding has an impeccable record at the Launceston 2100m, with four wins and two thirds from his seven starts throughout his career. Sigrid Carr has ridden this seasoned galloper on five occasions, where she has never finished worse than fourth to go along with three wins. This son of Casino Prince will do battle with Perun, who he beat last start, but on Sunday both of them will race at 54kg, which is a 1kg weight swing in Super Swoop’s favour. That swing in the weights should give him the edge over what looks to be his closest rival. From barrier two, Carr can settle in the one-one and let the speed go and if he dops his head and finds a rhythm quickly, he will be very hard to beat.
