Where Tasmanian Turf Club – Jellico St, Mowbray TAS 7248
When Sunday, February 19, 2023
First Race 3:19pm AEDT

The Tasmanian Turf Club will host their annual Tasmanian Oaks Day out of Launceston Racecourse, where it will host a very competitive eight-race program, highlighted by the Listed $150,000 Tasmanian Oaks. The track is currently rated a Soft, however, with no rain on the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, we should be racing a perfect Good 4 surface come race day. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit.

The first race on Launceston Oaks Day will jump at 3:19pm AEDT.

Tasmanian Oaks Tip: Soul Choice

The feature race of the day will be the $150,000 Tasmanian Oaks, where we will siding with the favourite and clear best horse in the race Soul Choice from the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott yard. This three-year-old filly has never finished outside of the top two at all of her five starts, with her last two starts in the Launceston Guineas and Strutt Stakes being her best runs to date. At her most recent start, this daughter of Redoute’s Choice was very impressive in the Strutt Stakes at Hobart, defeating Just A Needs by 2.5 lengths over 2100m. With the filly staying at 2100m and meeting a similar field to last start, there is no other runner in the field that looks to have the ability to get past her. Therefore, we have her on top and she should be leading from start to finish to take out back-to-back Listed races.

Best Bet at Launceston: Beluga Express

The first leg of the quaddie will see our best bet of the day go around in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, with the Ben & JD Hayes-trained Beluga Express returning from a four-month spell, with the benefit of a quiet trial at Cranbourne over 800m on February 6. This two-year-old colt ended his first preparation with a very nice win in a small field on the Ballarat Synthetic, after running fourth in the Listed Maribyrnong Trial Stakes on debut. Although his win at Ballarat was only by a head, he was very professional and showed a strong will to win when he was challenged 200m from home. Coming out of the Maribyrnong Trial Stakes the winner (Zulfiqar) and third placegetter (Charm Stone) have gone on to win Group 3 races since. Brendan McCoull will have to make up his mind quickly after drawing barrier 10, but if he can find a spot in the first four or five, he will give this colt every chance to return to the race track a winner.

Next Best at Launceston: Zeva Royale

The fourth race of the day will see the Barry Campbell-trained Zeva Royale rise to 1600m for the first time in her career after flashing home and finishing strong through the line, indicating that she is ready to take the step out to 1600m. This daughter of Needs Further was very good two starts back defeating Zewinna by just under half a length over 1420m at this track. This five-year-old mare has finished in the top four at three of her four starts this preparation over 1200m and 1400m, and now she looks ready to show her best over 1600m in the Benchmark 62 Handicap on Sunday. Anthony Darmanin will jump back aboard for his ninth ride on the mare, looking for his fourth win. Darmanin looks to get the run of the race from barrier 1 and as long as he can get this girl off the fence and into clear air in the final 300m, she will be charging at them late in the concluding stages.
