Lamprecht back in Top End as Darwin Cup Carnival looms
He shuns the limelight, but Kevin Lamprecht is undoubtedly one of the more experienced and successful trainers in the Northern Territory.
Based in Alice Springs, Lamprecht, who also has a long connection with the Tennant Creek community, has once again returned to the Top End with the Darwin Cup Carnival kicking off on July 8.
Lamprecht’s Travanti was a first-up sixth over 1200m (BM54) at Fannie Bay last weekend, and on Saturday he will be represented by Daniher against fellow three-year-olds over 1200m (BM64), Rupert’s Delight over 1300m (0-64) and Sweet As Scandi over 1300m (0-58).
Victorian jockey Mark Pegus, enjoying a working holiday in the north, will partner the trio.
Iknowhatyouredoing, Ginger Creek and Arriba help form Lamprecht’s team in the tropics, while Lisa, Huckleberry and Rhythmical – the other horses in the stable – have remained in the Red Centre.
On May 27, three-year-old gelding Iknowhatyouredoing – formerly trained by Richard and Chantelle Jolly in Adelaide – finished second on debut for Lamprecht behind the impressive Doc O’Connor over 1100m (BM57).
During the recent Alice Springs Cup Carnival held in April, Lamprecht had three wins with Rupert’s Delight over 1100m (0-58), Travanti over 1200m (0-58) and Ginger Creek over 1200m (0-62).
Greg Aldam, aligned with the Darwin Turf Club, is not only close friends with Lamprecht and wife Robyn, but he has part-owned numerous horses from the stable for well over 25 years.
“We just keep going about our business, we had a good finish to the Alice Springs carnival,” he said.
“Really proud of the little team of horses – they did a good job.
“We don’t get ahead of ourselves, never have, just keep poking along.
“Kevin’s brought a nice lower grade team to Darwin to see how we go against what looks like some quality horses in what should be a really strong carnival, which is great for the Darwin Turf Club.
“We’ve always had a reasonable little team of horses that have been competitive, particularly in the lower grades.
“It’s good to have young horses like Daniher.
“Even horses like Sweet As Scandi and Rupert’s Delight that are racing on Saturday – we’re under no illusions that they’re not champions, but they’re good honest horses.
“Good money spinners and they’ve proven it already in Alice Springs, and we’re just hoping they can adapt to the Darwin track.
Daniher raced on five occasions in Victoria with his best effort a last start third over 1590m in a Wangaratta maiden in December before a first up win in a 1200m Alice Springs maiden on April 1 and a second behind Dick Leech’s Century Fox in the NT Guineas (1600m) on April 17.
“Daniher’s a nice young horse that we purchased earlier in the year off Anthony and Sam Freedman,” Aldam added.
“He didn’t disappoint us in Alice Springs and we’ll just see how he handles the Darwin track on Saturday.
“Clearly, it’s a bit short for him and Doc O’Connor from the Gary Clarke stable is just a terrific sprinter, so we’ve got to kick off somewhere and it will be interesting to see how he handles it.
“It’s really just a pipe opener to hopefully go on towards the Darwin Guineas in a few weeks’ time.”
