The Kingston Town Stakes is a Group 3 race for open class horses and is run under set weights and penalty conditions, boasting a prize pool of $250,000.

Since the inaugural running of the Kingston Town Stakes, the race has been classified as a Principal Race (1948-1978) before being upgraded to Group 2 status from 1979 until 1989. However, from 1990 onwards, the Kingston Town has been classed as a Group 3.

From 1948 to 1990, the Kingston Town Stakes was run over 2400m, but from 1992 onwards the race has been a 2000m contest.

The race was previously known as the STC Cup, but was later renamed to the Kingston Town Stakes after the legendary thoroughbred won the race twice in 1980 and 1981.

Just Fine won the 2023 edition of the Kingstown Town Stakes in impressive fashion for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.

Notable winners of the Kingston Town Stakes include Alegron (2022), Finche (2019), Avilius (2018), He’s Your Man (2014), Herculian Prince (2010), Yobro (1996), Kingston Town (1980 & 1981), Tails (1969 & 1971) and Valerius (1959 & 1960).

Recent Kingston Town Stakes winners

  • Just Fine ($3.20) lived up to the bookies’ favouritism with a convincing victory in the 2022 Kingstown Town Stakes. The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained horse, which sat outside the leader Knights Order, before rounding the bend and bounding away impressively. Benaud and Montefilia raced on well to fill the minor placings.
  • James Cummings and Rachel King combined with Alegron ($20) to take out the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes at Randwick, defeating the race favourite Benaud ($2.70). After settling midfield from barrier one, King was able to navigate a path off the fence on the home turn before the eventual winner let down with a winning burst of acceleration. Kinghts Order ($4.20) led for most of the trip, but he ran out of gas at the 200m mark, as the winner and runner-up ran straight past him.
  • She’s Ideel ($2.80) has become the first mare since Ready To Lift in 2009 to win the Kingston Town Stakes, with the Bjorn Baker mare proving too good for her rivals. Jason Collett gave the race favourite a peach of a ride from barrier two, which saw her follow the speed before peeling off the back of the leader Entente ($26) to go straight past him. Of the beaten brigade Montefilia ($5) made up a lot of ground from the back to finish in second, 1.3 lengths behind She’s Ideel.
  • Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott only had the one runner in the 2020 Kingston Town Stakes and that was the only runner they needed, as Taikomochi ($9.50) proved way too strong for his rivals. Tim Clark settled the seven-year-old gelding behind the leader Wu Gok ($31) and as he started to struggle the winner took over with 300m to go and booted clear to put up a winning margin. With 100m to go, it appeared as though Shared Ambition ($4.20) and Brimham Rocks ($17) were going to challenge, but they couldn’t go with the winner late, leaving them to fill the placings.
  • At just his fourth start in Australia, the Chris Waller-trained Finche ($10) has taken out the Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes at Randwick. Kerrin McEvoy settled the six-year-old gelding behind the speed and gave him a very economical run, before peeling off the back of the leader, Stampede ($21), in the final stages of the race. The son of Frankel proved to have a touch of class late, and Carzoff ($41) flew home into third place.
