Kim Waugh to unveil new stable addition

Kim Waugh is ready to unveil her latest recruit from Lloyd Williams’s string of thoroughbreds.

Kim Waugh has enjoyed success with a couple of Macedon Lodge cast-offs so it’s no surprise she has happily welcomed another into her stable.

Lightly raced Galileo six-year-old Venezuela is the latest imported horse Waugh and her former Test cricketer husband Mark have purchased from leviathan owner Lloyd Williams.

They’re hoping Venezuela can bring as much joy as two-time Group Three placegetter Goathland and dual stakes winner Our Century, who were both picked up from the Williams’ prodigious string.

“It’s the third one we’ve bought off him now, the two other boys have been good to us,” Waugh said.

“Lloyd had spoken to Mark and recommended him, he said he had ability and he thought he’d be a nice buy for us.”

Venezuela has raced just five times, posting a maiden win in Ireland and a Kyneton victory at his final start for Williams in April.

Waugh has since given the horse a freshen-up and a couple of barrier trials and while he is likely to resume in Saturday’s TAB Handicap (1400m) at Kensington, he has also been accepted for a race over the same distance at Taree on Friday.

“We’re still teaching him to settle a bit, he’s a bit of a revvy fellow,” Waugh said.

“He’s got a bit of ability but we’ve got to make sure he’s doing it all at the right end.

“I thought his last run (at Kyneton) was a really nice run and he’s bred to get over a bit of ground.

“He’s just got to chill out a bit and he could end up a really nice stayer.”

Waugh confirmed both Goathland and Our Century were also progressing well and would be aimed towards races such as the Wyong and Newcastle Cups.
