Eight races are set down for judgement on Sunday at Kilmore for Kilmore Cup Day. The track has come up a Good 4 at the time of writing, and with a favourable forecast ahead, it should remain that way throughout the event. Our best tip of the day at Kilmore comes up in the last race, where the combination of Richard Cully and John Allen will be looking to build on this four-year-old gelding’s impressive record to date. His last-start effort at The Valley three weeks ago required a perfect ride from the jockey of the eventual winner to run him down. Prior to that, he was too strong for a similar field to what he faces here. If Pintoff brings the form of his last two runs to Kilmore, he should salute as our best tip.
Mick Price will be hoping the booking of Damien Oliver will help Bet Red shake the perennial bridesmaid tag. The five-year-old gelding has been sent around as a well-supported favourite in six of his 10 career starts, yet he’s only managed to get the job done once in his career. That was as favourite at Geelong back on January 2 this year at start number three. Since then, he has continuously found one better and failed to go on with the job despite looming into races nicely. He seemed to hit the front too early last time out and was run down in the shadows of the winning post. Nevertheless, he looks a good chance in this.
John Salanitri and Michael Poy combine in the second event on the Kilmore Cup card with a lightly raced 5YO mare who is fresh off a runner-up performance at Echuca five weeks ago. She took up a more positive position that day than she had done to date in her short career, and it produced her best result as she went down by a length to the eventual winner. Although she was worn down late by a handy type, she showed enough to suggest there is a maiden win in her.
