Kembla Grange racing preview – March 2, 2021

Kembla Grange will play host to seven races on Tuesday afternoon. The track is a Soft 6 and the rail is out +8m from the 1100m to the winning post and +6m for the remainder of the course. The first race is set to face the starter at 1:15pm.

Best Bet: Socrates

John O’Shea and Brenton Avdulla combine in the last race with three-year-old colt Socrates. The son of Tavistock broke his maiden at this track and distance back in September when winning by four lengths before going on to run ninth in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick. He hit the line very well first up over 1400m at Newcastle, reeling off the best 800m-200m sectional in the race, so the rise to 1600m should be ideal. He can settle a bit closer from barrier six and be close enough to pick them up in the straight. He looks a fantastic bet in the final race as he heads towards the ATC Derby.

Best BetRace 7 – Socrates (#5) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Next Best: Oblique

We highlighted Oblique when he was due to run at Gosford on Thursday, but he was scratched to run here instead. The now-gelded son of I Am Invincible was a very strong finisher in his only run to date at the Sunshine Coast, coming from eight lengths off the leader and eventual winner in the straight to be beaten less than two lengths. That run came over 1000m, so the 1200m should be ideal, and staying on a big straight like Kembla Grange will give the two-year-old every chance. He has had two promising trials heading into his first-up run and draws beautifully in barrier two under Keegan Latham. This is a good maiden for him against the older horses.

Next BestRace 4 – Oblique (#11) $4.40 with Sportsbet

Best Value: Steely

In what is a very open race, top weight Steely looks overs at $8. The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained four-year-old has won two of his three first-up attempts, including a win at this track last time when fresh. The son of All Too Hard finished within two lengths of Group 1 performers Mo’unga and Lion’s Roar in an extremely high-rating race that has produced eight subsequent winners. While he has drawn the outside alley and gives the rest of this field at least 2kg, he has the form to support him and has a class edge on most of his rivals. Christian Reith will have him three or four pairs back on the outside and should have him finishing off the better.

Best ValueRace 5 – Steely (#1) $8 with Sportsbet
