The Karrakatta Plate is a Group 2 race for two-year-olds, run over 1200m under set weights at Ascot, with this hosted by Perth Racing.
First staged in 1902 and won by San Toy, the Karrakatta Plate is Western Australia’s premier juvenile event and was a Group 1 race until it was downgraded in 1999.
Originally run over five furlongs, the Karrakatta Plate adopted its current distance in 1980 and has shifted between pre and post-New Year scheduling throughout its history.
The 2024 Karrakatta Plate, worth $500,000, was won by Bustling, defeating Earthstorm and Blue Rocket.
The Karrakatta Plate has been a launchpad for top-class careers, with recent stars including Amelia’s Jewel (2022), who went on to Group 1 glory in the Northerly Stakes.

- Bustling confirmed his status as Western Australia’s premier juvenile with a commanding victory in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot. Trained by Dan Morton, who made it back-to-back wins in the race after Super Smink in 2023, the son of Frosted was sent out an odds-on favourite and delivered in style. Ridden by Blake Shinn, Bustling led throughout and dashed clear with minimal urging to win by 4.25 lengths over Earthstorm, with Blue Rocket finishing a close third. The dominant display marked Bustling as a star in the making and gave Morton his third Karrakatta success.
- Super Smink capped a stellar juvenile campaign with a brilliant victory in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot, continuing the season-long dominance of fillies in Perth’s two-year-old ranks. Trained by Dan Morton, the daughter of Super One unleashed a powerful finish from the rear of the field to reel in the in-form Live To Tell, who was chasing a stakes treble. The pair cleared out from their rivals, putting three lengths on Ripcord, the best of the boys in third. It was a defining win for Super Smink, confirming her as the standout filly in the west.
- Amelia’s Jewel announced herself as a potential star with a stunning performance in the Group 2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) at Ascot. Trained by Simon Miller, the two-year-old filly overcame a wide draw and an unfavourable track pattern to deliver a dominant three-length win as the $1.80 favourite. Settling third last from barrier 15, jockey Pat Carberry bided his time before unleashing a powerful run in the straight. Baby Paris finished second, with Penny On The Queen in third.
