The 2020 Listed Kalgoorlie Cup is the feature race in Western Australia on Saturday evening and it has attracted a quality field including two Group 1 winners in Come Play With Me and Ihtsahymn. Divine Shadow and Friar Fox share favouritism with the top online bookmakers, ahead of Come Play With Me. Gloryland looks to be the speed influence in the race from the outside barrier.

Friar Fox comes off a great win in the Boulder Cup at this track last start and looks well suited stepping up to 2200m. Drawn in the middle of the pack from barrier seven, Shaun O’Donnell will land in a midfield spot and look to be strong late. The six-year-old mare has never missed the quinella from two starts at Kalgoorlie and has won over 2200m at Listed level over two years ago. She has been racing well this time in and looks well placed here.

This time last year, Come Play With Me was winning the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap, so we have to respect his chances in a much easier race. After drawing well in barrier three, Mitchell Pateman shouldn’t be too far away in the run and make sure that he doesn’t have to do any work under the big weight. His last run came a month ago when fifth in the Coolgardie Cup at this track over 1760m and he looked to be very strong through the line to suggest that he’ll be ready to go up to a more suitable trip. He has won four from six over 2200m, so expect him to be right in the finish.

Multiple Darwin Cup winner and Kingston Town Stakes winner Ihtsahymn goes around in what will be his last ever race. The ten-year-old grey gelding has been a marvel for so long, winning 12 from 63 and placing on another 14 occasions. He ran third in this race last year after winning his first Darwin Cup, and gets in well at the weights here as he follows a similar path. Drawn in barrier six for Peter Hall, they’ll land where the horse is comfortable and make sure he sees out the 2200m where he is a winner at in the past. His last start sixth in the Boulder Cup was encouraging and he should appreciate having a bit more fitness in his legs. It’d be great to see the old boy win it in his swansong.
