A field of 11 runners will contest the Group 3 JRA Chairman’s Trophy at Doomben on Saturday. The $150,000 feature has a touch of class in it, with the 2019 Group 1 VRC Derby winner, Warning, here for a run before The Q22 on June 12. Run over 2000m, there is a bit of speed engaged thanks to Seat Of Power and Get Stuck In, but we don’t think they will go overly quick. Hang Man is the $3.50 favourite ahead of Warning and So You Win.
JRA Chairman’s Trophy betting preview
Hang Man presents himself as one of the better bets on the program after a fast finishing third behind Paths Of Glory and Zaaki last time out in the Group 3 JRA Plate at Randwick. The seven-year-old son of Windsor Knot has won three of his past five starts, including wins in the Yarra Valley Cup and the Group 3 Easter Cup at Caulfield, beating Persan and Mahamedeis. That form looks elite compare to most of these, and with a good jockey in Glen Boss on board from barrier four, he should get a lovely run in transit and be finishing over the top of them. He looks primed here.
Barry Lockwood saddles up Platinum Invador in just his second start for the stable. The New Zealand international was bought by Peter Moody in a failed bid of getting him to the Melbourne Cup, before he was sent back to New Zealand where he finished second in the City of Auckland Cup and then fourth in both the Avondale Cup and Group 1 Auckland Cup, before returning to Australia. He ran super in his Queensland debut when second to Victory Eight over an unsuitable 1815m at Eagle Farm, so the rise to 2000m should suit, as will the likely wet track. He is right in this.
The Candy Man is a crowd pleaser and although he has been disappointing of late, he does get in here with only 57kg and is going to get conditions to suit. The big grey seven-year-old has won in three of his five races at Doomben and has four wins from six starts on heavy tracks which he will relish again on Saturday. Brad Stewart will get back aboard the Barry Baldwin-trained gelding for the first time in a long time which he should appreciate, and he can be ridden further forward from barrier five. He failed to beat a runner home on Saturday in the Hollindale Stakes, but that was a seriously good field so he should find this much easier.
