Emerging jockey Jordan Childs is nearing a return to the saddle as he steps up his recovery from a nasty fall at Moonee Valley back on February 12.

Childs fell from his mount Zacouver in the seventh event on the Moonee Valley card after the Corstens-trained runner clipped heels with rivals approaching the home turn.

“The ball of my shoulder, where it all connects, ended in my chest,” the son of 72-time Group 1-winning jockey Greg Childs revealed.

This is not the first time that Childs has missed a substantial amount of time through injury, following a fall during his apprenticeship year at Hamilton in 2013.

Childs has revealed that what looked to have been a fairly simple fall ended up quite serious with “a little bit of nerve damage and a few niggling problems”.

While Childs is looking at returning to trackwork in the next month or two, he is not expected to be back in form guides until early in the new racing season.

Having formed a strong partnership with Archie Alexander and Paul Pruesker in recent times, the son of a gun be hoping to get back aboard some of those stables’ star runners in time for the big races during the Spring Carnival.

Childs partnered Surprise Baby for Pruesker in the Bart Cummings win back in 2019 en route to a fifth-place finish in the Melbourne Cup. He was removed from the pre-race Melbourne Cup favourite last year in favour of Craig Williams, and it remains to be seen whether Childs will regain the ride on one of Australia’s best stayers.
