The Group 3 James H B Carr Stakes sees a field of eight three-year-old fillies contest the $160,000 prize purse at Randwick on Saturday. There isn’t a great deal of speed on paper, with Elizabeel the likely leader with Nicci’s Fling and potentially Matchmaker from deeper out. Kiku is the $2.80 favourite with online bookmakers after a good win two weeks ago at Randwick, ahead of Matchmaker who won on the same day. We see the James HB Carr Stakes panning out in a similar way to the market.

While we think the market has this pretty close to bang on, we are going to flip the top two around and side with the New Zealand filly, Matchmaker. Now with Chris Waller, the Makfi filly has had three really good runs in Australia which saw her take out the PJ Bell Stakes at Group 3 level in her most recent start by the narrowest of margins. That run came over 1200m and she really hit the line, so the rise to 1400m looks ideal. She has drawn the outside alley, but with no speed in the race, we hope that James McDonald can settle a bit further forward on this nice filly. She can go back-to-back.

Chris Waller’s other runner in the race looks the clear danger in Kiku. The Zoustar filly was a nice winner over the mile on April 10, beating hot favourite The Irishman by 0.8 lengths. She took a little while to get going, so we are going to risk her as she drops back in trip and rises 2kg in weight which is a concern. She should get a great run in transit from barrier five under Tommy Berry however, and she is undefeated at this trip so she certainly isn’t a lay. The clear danger and is looking for four straight wins.

All Hallows’ Eve is a nice filly going places but she just has no luck. First-up, she finished with the best overall race sectionals after being held up for most of the straight. Two starts later she repeated that effort as well as having the best last 400m race sectional of the day over 1100m on the Kensington track. She then reeled off the best 800m – 200m race sectional in the PJ Bell when a length off Matchmaker. She gets Jamie Kah aboard here which will help, but she might need it wetter and could find herself in an awkward spot from barrier one. With even luck she can be winning at a price.
