HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie picks for the eight-race card at Ipswich on Wednesday, kicking off at 1:38pm AEST. The rail is in the true position and the track is rated a Soft 5, but with warm and dry weather forecast for the area across Monday and Tuesday, we could see an upgraded surface.

Ipswich Best Bet – Naughty Harry

After not being overly impressive in three trials, David Vandyke’s three-year-old Naughty Harry started as an $8 chance on debut at Doomben on January 15, but he proved far too good for his rivals. The son of Tavistock won by only three-quarters of a length, but he was incredibly green and looked like he wasn’t a fully furnished racehorse just yet. Given the gelding’s breeding, he will relish the step out from 1350m to 1666m on Wednesday, while barrier three is going to allow him to settle in the first four or five and be within striking distance. Finishing in the placings behind Naughty Harry on debut were Drive A Deel and Fastnet Jack, with that pair both winning on Saturday, franking the form for this galloper. We are cautious that Kyle Wilson-Taylor has jumped off to ride Atlantic Eagle, who won convincingly for him at the same Doomben meeting and ran one millisecond faster over the same distance, but nothing is lost with the booking of Larry Cassidy.

Best BetRace 7 – Naughty Harry (#8) $3.20 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Ipswich – Meriden Flash

We are hoping to finish the day on a high, and after his last-start victory, we are confident that Meriden Flash can deliver. The Toby & Trent Edmonds-trained galloper is undefeated in two starts, winning at the Sunshine Coast on debut in October before romping in by 4.8 lengths at Ballina on December 27 as a $1.40 favourite. The four-year-old son of Statue Of Liberty was backed as if unbeatable on that occasion, and the punters got it bang on as he kicked clear to win impressively under Robbie Fradd. The jockey only had three rides across the border that day, so we doubt he would have stuck around for this runner in the last race if he didn’t have an opinion of the horse; indeed, we are happy to see a similar scenario play out on Wednesday, as Fradd has a 2.5-hour wait between his ride in race four and this one in the last. Dropping 1.5kg from his last win to 58.5kg, Meriden Flash should get a good enough run in transit from barrier nine and go on to prove too good once again.

Next BestRace 8 – Meriden Flash (#3) $4.20 with Sportsbet

Ipswich Value Bet – Le Heros

Since coming to Australia, jockey Samantha Collett has made Ipswich her own, winning 11 times from just the 43 rides at the track. In race four on Wednesday, the Kiwi hoop will partner Paul Duncan’s four-year-old gelding Le Heros in a 1200m Benchmark 68. The son of Kermadec has won twice form 10 career starts, including a four-length romp almost 12 months ago at Doomben and a convincing one-length victory at this track when first-up this time in on Christmas Eve. Since his maiden win last February, Le Heros finished fourth in back-to-back races behind Tamilaide and Neutron, which is handy form, before going for a lengthy spell. The gelding defeated a subsequent winner in Mistress Of Doom in his first-up run, before heading to the Gold Coast as a $31 chance behind The Ritz and Palladas. That looks good enough form for this race, given he drops significantly in class back to Benchmark 68 company. He is a winner at this track and distance when leading all of the way under Collett, so we expect to see similar tactics adopted, especially from barrier one. This looks a good race for him, and the $4.50 at Sportsbet is well worth a play.

Best ValueRace 4 – Le Heros (#1) $4.50 with Sportsbet
