Imperatriz (+300) has asserted her authority in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon, smashing her opposition in breathtaking style.

She and the well-favoured Giga Kick (-142.86) both turned together 150m to run with Imperatriz putting pay to her rivals in an astounding return from a spell.

Rothfire (+400) was able to get the better of Giga Kick in the concluding stages, leaving the 2022 Everest winner settling for third placing in what will be remembered as a race with a rising star in the form of Imperatriz.

Ben Gleeson spoke on behalf of trainer Mark Walker and couldn’t contain his excitement and an element of relief.

“Yeah, it’s a huge relief,” said Gleeson.

“A huge day for the team with four winners and a Group 1 (in New Zealand).

“Big credit to the team at home.

“Having Giga Kick behind us I was worried he had us in a stalker position, but when he took off Mick (Dee) just read the race perfectly, got the trail and the way she let down.”

Jockey Michael Dee was the beneficiary of Opie Bosson staying in New Zealand and made no mistakes for the Te Akau team. Even quipping in hope to retain the ride on Imperatriz while endorsing his mare’s performance moving forward.

“I was little bit concerned when I saw Giga Kick come around,” said Dee.

“I know she’s got a great turn-of-foot as we’ve all seen in the past and as it turned out, I pressed the button too soon, cause we hit the front almost within three or four strides.

“Oppie (Bosson) said to me yesterday she’s got the best turn-of-foot he’s ever felt and now I’ve gotta say, she’s probably the best I’ve ever felt.”

Now the stable hasn’t confirmed they’re looking for an Everest slot, but if they do find a spot, Imperatriz is currently a +500 chance.

The more likely option will be the Group 1 Moir Stakes back at Moonee Valley on September 29 where she’s a clear +125 favourite.
